SPE Membership

Membership of the SPE

The SPE is a global organisation of 88,000+ professionals who have helped to shape the E&P industry in the past, who are responsible for much of its current innovation, and who will continue to lead it forward through the years to come.

Here in the UK, the thriving SPE Sections in Aberdeen and London organise their own constantly evolving programmes of technical seminars, topic-specific workshops and presentations by industry experts. Students and young professionals also have their own learning and development programmes, while all members gain access to the SPE’s global eLibrary of more than 37,000 technical papers.

Although engineers are the core of SPE, not all SPE members are engineers. Success in meeting today’s technical challenges requires cooperation across disciplines, and we welcome equally those with appropriate qualifications in geology, geophysics, earth science, environment, health and safety, mathematics, information technology, as well as management and economics.

Equally, while much of the focus for UK members is on the UKCS, our meetings and presentations include topics of interest across all the oil and gas regions of the world.

The Benefits of Membership of the SPE

By joining the SPE, you’ll be among more than 88,000 of the brightest minds in the industry – people who will be ready to share their knowledge and experience with you.

As a member, the ability to acquire knowledge will become available both online and face-to- face. UK members can take part not only in global SPE conferences, workshops and forums but also in the thought-provoking series of seminars, workshops and presentations organised by the Society’s Sections in Aberdeen and London, all of which provide invaluable opportunities for members to network with their peers.

The main SPE website – www.spe.org – has a ‘members only’ area where intelligent search engines will guide you through more than 37,000 technical papers, journal articles and thousands of other E&P resources that will help you do your job and advance your career.

ou’ll also gain online access to Technical Interest Groups, distance learning courses, E&P toolbox software applications as well as directories of E&P consultants, current career opportunities and recruitment specialists.

As well as a free monthly copy of the definitive Journal of Petroleum Technology (JPT), members in the UK also receive regular issues of SPE Review which carries reports on each Section’s activities.

Through all of this – plus discounts on meetings, courses, books and journals as well as a global insurance programme – SPE membership offers an unrivalled opportunity to play an active part in our industry’s future.

Acquiring Chartered Status

SPE members have the opportunity to acquire Chartered status as a result of an alliance recently established between SPE and the UK Energy Institute.

Created in 2003 from the merger of the Institute of Petroleum and the Institute of Energy, the Energy Institute is a licensed member of the Engineering Council - the UK chartering organisation. Representing almost 12,000 professionals both nationally and internationally, this leading professional body has extensive experience of competence based assessment.

Chartered Engineer (C.Eng)

This designation is available to engineers throughout the world through a competence assessment in areas such as engineering applications, innovation in solving engineering problems, technical and commercial leadership, interpersonal skills and commitment to professional development.

Chartered Petroleum Engineer

Although based on similar competences to those for CEng, this accreditation is only available from the Energy Institute. Recognition is given to those with specialist skills in drilling and production, reservoir management and operations and downstream production.
